Rebound Retro Studio 1.5.0-beta.1 – First Public Beta Available For Download

news software

It's free — what are you waiting for? :) That one was quite an effort, baking in the oven for months. I started this project primarily for myself, because I wanted to have a comfortable IDE for my retro development learning efforts. That's why the supported languages and platforms are exactly those that I code for personally.

Toolchain support at a glance

  • Supported target platforms:
    • Apollo Vampire V4 (tested on the A6000), Amiberry or FS-UAE
    • C64 Ultimate or VICE
    • MEGA65 or Xemu
  • Supported languages:
    • Amiga/Apollo: assembly, C
    • C64/C64U: BASIC, assembly
    • MEGA65: BASIC, assembly

RRS runs on Macs with Apple Silicon. I tested it on macOS 26 and 27; older versions from macOS 11 on may work, but I can't guarantee that. A Linux version is in development and will follow the macOS release.

What does beta mean?

I tested everything as well as possible and am actually using it (almost) daily for my coding experiments. The Apollo/Amiga toolchain is the one I use the most and therefore that one is the most tested. The integrated file manager is the newest feature addition, but the standalone version has already proven to be pretty stable in day-to-day usage.

In general, you should expect a pretty stable product, tested by only one person under real usage conditions. In other words: I cannot guarantee that the software is bug-free (no software is really bug-free anyways), that it is impossible to break, or that everything works flawlessly in every situation.

What you can do – if you want to

Simple. Download Rebound Retro Studio here, install it on your Mac and play around with it. If you come across issues or want to suggest a new feature or changes to an existing one, click on Help ▸ Report a Problem…. This opens a dialog that displays an email draft, which you can copy to your clipboard or open straight away in your email client as a mail draft. The gathered data helps me debug, but if you don't want to share it, just delete it from the mail text.

I am happy about every bug report or feature request. Together, we can shape RRS into something very special for dedicated retro developers, which is not possible for one person alone.

Will it be free forever?

Yes :) I will not charge a dime for RRS. Not now and not in the future. You can buy me a coffee on Ko-fi if you like what I started here and want to support my work in general. Or for whatever reason, I'll take it :D
